Jeans and Pants for the Fall Season

Evidently, it’s officially autumn! It’s sweater weather! I’m putting away my shorts and sizing up jeans and pants for the fall season. The weather changed quite suddenly here in the Pacific Northwest, and we’ve certainly plunged into cooler temperatures and rain. I don’t know about you, but after I’m done back to school shopping for my kids, I feel like it’s my turn for a closet refresh! 😉 Fall is such a great time for new clothes. The rich colors of these pants remind me of fall’s changing leaves: yellows, reds, browns and greens. As a matter of fact, we have all of these pants and jeans (and more!) at SearchByInseam.com, where you’ll find short and tall inseams – and everything in-between for men and women of all sizes. Not sure what inseam length you need? Watch our new video on how to measure your inseam.

Firstly, these Tall Alina Wide Pants are a beautiful mustard yellow, which is a great color for fall. They have an extra long inseam length of 37″ and come in women’s sizes S-XXL. More colors are also available.

Corduroy is a classic fall fabric, and these men’s Cooper Straight Leg Corduroy Pants in Curry are going fast! They would be perfect men’s attire for a fall family photoshoot because of their rich curry color. Check out Seattle Family Photographer Ling Ling Zheng‘s blog post for more fall family photo outfit inspiration. These men’s cords come in inseam lengths of 32″ and 34″. More colors are also available.

Another great color for fall is dark green, as can be seen in these men’s Obey Easy Cord Pants in Dark Cedar.  They have a comfortable elastic waist and an inseam length of 29.25″.

Next to corduroy, leather is also a popular fabric for fall. And if you’re trying to be animal-friendly, want a low-maintenance fabric, or just on a budget, faux leather is the way to go! These Tall Khaki Green Stretch Leather Look Leggings are fun, unique and come in 34″ and 36″ inseam lengths.

Rust is another great color for fall and I love it in these ribbed flare stretch pants! These come in a 33″ inseam and can be dressed up or down; they’re super versatile.

Brown can be such a warm and rich color. It’s softer than black and is perfect for fall. These Tall High Waist Flare Dress Pants in Brown have an extra long inseam length of 37″. More colors available in sizes XS-XXL.

As far as jeans go, I love dark wash denim and fun colors for fall. These men’s Skinny Caramel Brown Hyper Stretch Jeans are an unexpected shade of brown. They would be great for a causal office, dinner date, football game or family photoshoot. Men’s inseam lengths come in 30″, 32″ and 34″.

Dark wash denim is classic and classy. Furthermore, a pair of straight leg or bootcut jeans in a great navy hue will never go out of style. These Wrangler Women’s Retro Mae Mid Rise Stretch Boot Cut Jeans come in over 20 shades of blue, inseam lengths of 30″, 32″, 34″ and 36″ and regular and plus sizes.

How to Measure Inseam Video

I’ve been wanting to make a how to measure inseam video for months now, and finally got around to it! Since it’s summer, both my kids are around during the day and I needed their extra hands to film and edit this video. My husband also helped with the editing, so it was a whole family project. 🙂

So, why does inseam matter? Knowing the length of your legs is one of the most important measurements that will help you find a great fit. Just like waist and hip measurements, inseam length determines whether you’ll wind up with highwater pants, hemlines that drag on the ground, or a perfect fit. While you can buy jeans and pants that are too long and take them to the tailor for professional hemming, shopping for your exact inseam length will save you time, energy and money. Who doesn’t want that?! If you’d like more information about tailoring, check out this post about how to find a good and inexpensive tailor. But if you’d like to find the perfect length for you without dealing with a tailor, keep reading.

As this how to measure inseam video shows, you want to start with a pair of jeans or pants that fit you well in length. You’ll also need a measuring tape. Any kind will work, but the flexible sewing measuring tapes are easiest for this task. Here’s a cute pink sewing measuring tape on Amazon, if you don’t already have one. Now take the jeans and lay them flat on a table or the floor. Smooth them out and turn them so you can see the inside seam on one of the legs. Use the measuring tape to carefully measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg. This number (in inches) is your inseam length. After you know this important number, use it to shop for your exact inseam length at SearchByInseam.com.

Search By Inseam is a tall woman-owned small business, and I try to support other women in business as much as possible. Here is a list of women entrepreneurs we love to work with – and either have direct experience with and/or have a reciprocal relationship with. I highly recommend all of these!

First up is The Elevated Closet. This tall woman-owned small business is run by Jordan Smith, who is a 6’4″ former WNBA player and women’s college basketball coach. She really knows how to make clothing for tall women! You’ll be impressed with women’s jeans in extra long inseam lengths like 35″, 36″, 37″ and 38″ in sizes up to 20-22. There is such a need for tall women’s plus size clothing and Jordan is doing a great job in this space! You’ll also find tall maternity jeans in 37″ inseam lengths as well as tall tops, swimsuits, dresses and shoes, as well as some tall kids’ clothing. Use this affiliate link for The Elevated Closet and code SEARCHBYINSEAM for 10% off your first order. You’ll also find The Elevated Closet’s jeans and pants available on Search By Inseam.

Second on the list is TJL Collection, where fashion, fit and length meet. This is a Black tall woman-owned small business run by Tiffany Jones-Lewis. Tiffany designs beautiful and colorful tall women’s pants and jumpsuits in inseams that go up to 38.5″! If you are a tall woman, you know how hard it is to find a jumpsuit that is long enough in both the legs and the torso! TJL Collection also has tall bodysuits, dresses, and great slogan t-shirts. You’ll find tall women’s plus size clothing up to a size 3XL. The pants and jumpsuits are available on Search By Inseam as well. And if you’re in the Dallas, TX area, check out the periodic Tall Girls Meet Up events sponsored by TJL Collection, where you can make lasting connections with fun, food and fashion. I’d be in if I lived closer! 😉

Thirdly, Sassy n Tall is a tall woman-owned small business started by Canadian Corina Taylor that specializes in tall women’s t-shirts made of sustainable eco-friendly bamboo and cotton. These shirts are designed for long tall women, but lots of women who aren’t tall and are just looking for a long shirt to cover their rear ends are also fans of these. They are soft and luxurious and I own three of them in different styles and colors. 🙂 You can check out my full review here. Corina has designed and manufactured them in Canada and ships worldwide. When I ordered mine, she put them in the mail on the same day!

The fourth woman entrepreneur I love working with is Bellevue, WA Photographer Ling Ling Zheng. Ling Ling is a very talented photographer and has done beautiful work for me personally and professionally. You can check out some of her photos in this Tall and Sustainable Clothing blog post.  If you live in the Bellevue/Seattle/Eastside area and are looking for business, family, maternity, or newborn photos, check her out! She is super organized and also laid back, which is a great combo in a professional photographer.

Fifth on the list is Gi Wear, a Black woman-owned small business specializing in tall girl approved athleisure wear.  Gi Wear was founded by 5’10” Sheree Hudson. Sheree had a hard time finding activewear leggings that were long enough for her legs, so she decided to create her own! Gi Wear carries 36″ inseam leggings, athletic skirts, crop tees, gym bag and more. Leggings and skirts come in sizes small to 2XL.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of tall woman-owned small businesses! We are always looking to add more to our list, so please comment below if you have any to recommend!

Before and After Jeans Makeover

I love a good before and after makeover, don’t you? It’s so fun to see the comparison pictures and see how much better the after photo looks – at least most of the time. 😉  Well here is a before and after jeans makeover that I’m excited to share with you!

Dale contacted me recently and said, “Even though 30 inch inseam is not an unusual size, it is hard to find none the less. Lately I have had to buy long ones and feel like a 1950s kid with cuffs.” He included this picture of his jeans that were too long and had to be cuffed:

Dale's jeans are so long, he had to cuff them.
Dale’s jeans were so long, he had to cuff them.

He went on to say, “Looked at your business web site. Easy to navigate… Went to men’s pants and could not find 30 inch inseam carpenter pants.” I always love to help people find exactly what they are looking for. It’s the reason I started Search By Inseam! 🙂 So I searched online and found these Levi’s Gold Label Carpenter Jeans for him that I thought would be perfect. I sent him the link and I got this “after” photo a few days later with the words “Satisfied customer.” That was music to my ears!

Dale with the perfect fit for his before and after jeans makeover!

Are you looking for a pair of jeans or pants that are hard to find? Let me know! I’m happy to provide extra personal service and I’d love to help you find the perfect fit.  Everyone deserves to look and feel good in clothes that fit them well. Would you like a before and after jeans makeover?

Our New Website is Live!

After months of hard work and lots of late nights, our new website is live! Hooray! The last major update to the site was all the way back in 2014, so it was time! 🙂

Since over half of our customers are shopping on their phones now, I talked to the graphic designer I worked with on the last update and told him I wanted the new site to be way more mobile-friendly. He suggested I look at Shopify because it can automatically resize the website to any phone, tablet, or laptop. And anytime a new size of phone comes out, it will incorporate that as well. So Search By Inseam is now running on Shopify and so far, so good. This blog is still on a WordPress platform, in case that is interesting to anyone. 😉

Search By Inseam's new header image
Search By Inseam‘s new header image

The new header image is a compilation of models from our different sellers. I looked for happy, smiling models that were more representative of our customer base. It was really hard to find any models who were smiling! Why do most models look so serious?? This is the first time we’ve had a male model on the homepage, too, so that’s fun. Search By Inseam is the best place for women and men to find jeans and pants in their exact inseam length, and I wanted the main photo to convey that. It was a fun treasure hunt for me to search for models of different genders and backgrounds wearing a mix of jeans and pants.

Also new and super cool in this build of Search By Inseam is the addition of women-owned small businesses in our product offering. In the past, we’ve only had jeans and pants from major brands, so this is really exciting! One of our new sellers is both woman-owned and Black-owned, which is doubly special. TJL Collection is “where fashion, fit and length meet.” Run by Tiffany Jones-Lewis, who stands 6’1″ tall, you’ll find extra long inseam lengths of 37″ and 38″. Her creations are colorful, fresh, and fun, and even include tall jumpsuits! How hard are those to find anywhere else?

Another woman-own small business we’re now featuring is The Elevated Closet. Owned and operated by Jordan Smith, a 6’4″ former WNBA player, the mission of The Elevated Closet is “to empower all women to follow their dreams with confidence and style!” For 10% off your first order, use the link above (or any Elevated Closet product link on Search By Inseam) and use the code SEARCHBYINSEAM at checkout.

These great changes make me super excited about our new website! Our goal remains the same: to help women and men of all sizes quickly and easily find jeans and pants that fit well. We’ve already helped thousands of customers find tall, petite, short, average, maternity, and plus-size bottoms, and our new website will enable us to help even more people. Please check out our new digs and comment below with your feedback!

Tall Sustainable Clothing – Review of Sassy n Tall T-shirts

Happy Earth Week! I thought this was the perfect time to do a post about tall sustainable clothing. Did you know that bamboo is one of the fastest-growing and most sustainable plants on Earth? Bamboo is more eco-friendly to grow than cotton because it requires less water and less space, and it also doesn’t require the use of pesticides, insecticides, or even fertilizer. Whereas cotton crops use 25% of the insecticides and 11% of all pesticides used in the world! Amazing, right? I also think bamboo is super cool because it naturally absorbs moisture, is very breathable, and is totally anti-microbial! It’s also very soft to wear, which I love. 🙂

I was browsing around on Facebook last month and happened upon a new small business for tall clothing that I hadn’t heard of before: Sassy n Tall. This company was started by another tall female entrepreneur like me, who happens to have a similar name to me, too: Corina! 🙂 We hit it off on a Facebook video call and I just had to order some of her tall t-shirts. I’m not someone with an extremely long torso, but I’m definitely not into the crop top shirt trend, either. 😉 I do usually order tall size t-shirts from Eddie Bauer, Old Navy, Gap, and Lands’ End. Sometimes I find that Nordstrom and Shopbop will have shirts that are long enough for me, too, even though they are not technically tall clothing. But all of Sassy n Tall‘s t-shirts are made by and for tall women, which makes it easy.

I also read a review of someone who’s not tall, but just wanted a shirt to cover her backside, so you don’t need to be tall to appreciate these shirts. 🙂 As you’ll see in these pictures that Bellevue, WA Photographer Ling Ling Zheng took, the shirts are great coverage for yoga poses. I don’t always care about covering my rear end, but I do when I’m in leggings of any kind. 🙂 We took these photos at the Bellevue Botanical Garden at the end of March.

I often wear t-shirts with straight hems, but I like how the rounded hem looks, especially from the side. These tees are longer in the front and back, but shorter on the sides. They are tall sustainable clothing because they are made from Oeko-Tex certified bamboo. Every shirt is designed and manufactured in Canada.

In both of the above photos, I’m wearing the Sassy n Tall Scoop Neck – Still Got It Tee in Mid Heather Grey. It’s a nice light grey for a light summer like me. But I really love these next t-shirts in pink and blue, because I just feel more “me” in color. 🙂 Here’s Ling Ling getting a fun shot of me through some of the only flowers that were blooming at the time. I’m wearing the Sassy n Tall VaVaVa Voom V-Neck T-Shirt in Fandango Pink. These tall dark wash jeans have a 34.5″ inseam and are Joe’s Honey Bootcut Jeans in Rikki and were bought at SearchByInseam.com.

I really prefer to tuck in the front of my shirt because I have a pear shape (which I learned through an awesome Adore Your Wardrobe class) and it’s more flattering for my body type. I just look frumpy when my clothes hide my waist. So I was very happy to see that these Sassy n Tall shirts actually stay tucked in! Here’s another shot of me with a tucked in tee and jeans:

This is the Sassy n Tall Scoop Neck Still Got It Tee in Stellar Blue. I think this color is my favorite, but the pink is a close second. I asked Corina if she’d have other colors like white available, and she said if she gets enough orders, she’ll run another color. These bamboo shirts are all soft and you can tell they are well made. I love a high quality t-shirt! All the Sassy n Tall shirts are designed and manufactured in Canada. I had a great ordering experience, and Corina got my shirts in the mail within hours of receiving my order of these three shirts. (Order 3 shirts for free shipping.) I am wearing a size small in all these t-shirts. I’m 6′ tall and 160 lbs. This is not a sponsored post; I paid for the shirts with my own money. Some of the links above that are not Sassy n Tall links are affiliate links and I may receive a small commission on anything purchased through those links at no additional cost to you. Best Stores for Men’s Shorter Inseam Lengths

A friend of mine said she was shopping for a 28″ inseam jean for her 14-year-old son recently, and had a hard time finding something short enough for him that also had a small enough waist. Since my son is 13 and topping out of kid sizes, I started looking for the best stores for men’s shorter inseam lengths for him, too. A good portion of our sales at SearchByInseam.com are for men’s jeans in 26-28″ inseams. Besides teenagers, there are also plenty of men with shorter inseam lengths because the average American male is just under 5’10” tall. Although someone with below average height doesn’t necessarily have a below average inseam length, it is often correlated. No matter what your height, it’s important to know your inseam length, and we tell you how to measure your inseam length here.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about the best brands for shorter mean’s inseams (this post first appeared in 2018), so here’s an updated list with the best stores for men’s shorter inseam lengths:

  1. SearchByInseam.com. We may be biased, but this is the best place to shop for shorter inseam lengths – or any inseam length, for that matter. The site allows you to search multiple sellers for your exact inseam and waist size, saving you time and money. You can also select your favorite brands and price range, as well as shop for jeans, pants, shorts, or workout pants.

It’s Time to Shop for Shorts!

It’s rainy and 42 degrees here in Seattle right now, but it’s time to shop for shorts! 🙂 Early spring is the best time to shop for shorts because stores are stocking up for Spring Break and have a great selection. Some stores are even running sales on their shorts to get their inventory moving! I’m seeing lots of colors and trends, and wanted to share those with you. I’ll also tell you how to figure out which shorts inseam is best for you.

I love all the colors I’m seeing in shorts right now, and I wanted to see if I could make a rainbow of shorts for this post. It was tough to find purple, but red through blue was pretty easy. 😉

First up, we have a red bike short from Old Navy. Bike shorts are great for biking (duh), but they also work well for yoga, running, or wearing under a skirt. Bike shorts tend to have a longer inseam length, and this pair comes in 3 different lengths: 7.25″, 8″ and 9.25″. They are often made from compression material and are great at holding you in. Look for features such as tag-free and moisture-wicking.

Athletic shorts have also been a trend in recent years. Wear these for anything athletic, or simply to hang out in when the weather warms up. I wear shorts like this daily in the summer because they are so lightweight and comfortable. These bright orange shorts from Buckle are a bit longer in the back, which is super nice for extra coverage when you’re active.

For yellow , I found this cheery pair of Juicy Couture Yellow French Terry Sweat Shorts from Nordstrom. These shorts show off the high waist trend we’ve seen a lot in the last couple years. Sweat shorts are also making a comeback, with their soft lining and laid back vibe. With a 7″ inseam, these shorts fall in-between Bermuda knee-length shorts and short athletic shorts, which might feel too modest for some, but perfect for others who want a bit longer coverage.

Green is my favorite color, and I love the tie waist on these paperbag shorts from Buckle. To wear the paperbag shorts trend well, it helps to have a defined waist and be comfortable tucking your shirt in. Tucking your shirt in allows you to really show off the cute waist details. Many shorts in this trend feature very short inseam lengths, like this 2.25″ inseam below.

These teal shorts from Eddie Bauer are great for outdoor adventures or casual pursuits close to home. They offer sun protection and are made from stretchy nylon with a little bit of spandex. The regular inseam length is 7 inches; the petite inseam length is 6.5 inches; the tall inseam length is 7.5 inches, and the women’s plus inseam length is 7 inches. This is a good length for casual shorts and hiking shorts.

Jean shorts are always in style, and this year is no different. This medium indigo wash jean short from Silver Jeans has a shorter 4″ inseam that’s perfect for hanging out. It features a mid-rise which is good for either tucking your shirt in or leaving it out. Distressing is fairy heavy on these jean shorts, making them good for casual days.

And finally, we make it to the end of the rainbow with purple shorts! 🙂 These high waisted purple shorts from Express have a short 3.5 inch inseam length and look best with a tucked-in top. Their shape and tailoring make them a dressier option, and they’d be great with heels or wedge sandals.

Kid too tall for children’s jeans?

Is your kid too tall for children's jeans?
Is your kid too tall for children’s jeans?

Is your kid too tall for children’s jeans all of a sudden? It sneaks up on you for sure! We are just starting to hit that point with my 12-year-old son. For years, he always wore the same size clothing as his age. But at some point, he started moving through the sizes faster than that, and now he’s needing jeans and pants that are in the 14-16 size range. And I think another growth spurt is just around the corner! 😉

My husband and I are both tall, and he’s on the taller end of the growth chart, too, so it won’t be long before our kid is too tall for children’s jeans and pants. What then? I’m a planner and I like to shop sales and buy ahead whenever I can. So I started looking around online, and found that there were actually some retailers that went up to a kid size 20! Whew! We have a few more years (I hope!) until we need to start buying him adult jeans and pants.

Currently, we shop at a few online stores for children’s clothes. Hanna Andersson has been one of our favorites for hand-me-down quality, but they usually only go up to a size 12 for pants. Sometimes you can find 14-16, but usually that is just for tops. We like the boys’ pants and fleece at Carter’s and Eddie Bauer – and both of these stores go up to a children’s size 14. The Children’s Place carries sizes up to size 16, and that’s been a good place for kid ski pants, athletic pants, warm fleece pants, and sherpa hoodies. (Both my boys are crazy for sherpa hoodies!) We buy kid sizes up to 18 at Stitch Fix, Gap, and Old Navy. And Nordstrom, Macy’s, Amazon, and Lands’ End actually go up to a kid size 20!

Oh and in case you are looking for footed pajamas for bigger kids (both my boys still want them!), we have several pairs from Footed Pajamas and like them. After you top out at a kid size XL, you can easily go into adult footed pajamas that are based on height.

So what happens after a kid’s size 20? You enter the brave new world of adult sizing! For joggers and some other types of pants, you just start at an XS size. If your kid is skinny, get pants that have a working drawstring. For jeans, you’re going to need to measure your inseam. Once you know your inseam, shop at Search By Inseam for the exact length you need. Where are we getting our shortest jeans? With ankle length styles being so popular right now, it’s easier than ever to find a shorter inseam for your teen or kid who’s too tall for children’s sizes. You can read our blog post on Short Men’s Jeans or check our buying guide for women’s petite/short inseams.

When your kid is too tall for children’s jeans anymore, don’t panic. Yes, you can grieve that your little one is growing up – that is normal. But after that, you can move on into the adult section, where XS sizes are often on clearance! 😉
